Playbit
Sandboxed C runtime with a native UI and WebGPU layer for personal-scale apps
Tier B · UsefulToolAppplaybit.app

Playbit is an application runtime and platform, not a design library: you write apps against a C API with an ABI-stable syscall interface, capability-based handles, nestable sandboxes, and poll-based async. It ships graphics, networking, filesystem, collections, and two UI layers (the original UI plus a newer UI3), with WebGPU underneath. The first public iteration runs only on Apple Silicon macOS, with Windows, Linux, mobile, and web named as future targets. Aimed at people building responsive expressive tools that do not fit the browser model.
For an agent
Do not reach for this to build a web UI — there is no React, no CSS, and no npm surface; it is a C-level runtime whose UI3 library is its own widget model. It only earns a look when the user explicitly wants a native, sandboxed, single-binary desktop tool on Apple Silicon and has said Electron or Tauri is wrong. Treat everything as moving: the runtime is a first iteration, the docs carry a UI vs UI3 split that signals API churn, and no licence is published, so confirm terms before writing code against it.
Why it is here. A serious, unusually principled attempt at a post-browser app platform, and worth watching — but today it is a research-grade runtime with an audience of roughly one platform.
