The portfolio site of Chema Mendez, a Spain-based mixed-media digital artist who studied Communication Design at FIT in New York and now composites public-domain paintings, photography, 3D renders and AI-generated elements into surrealist scenes. The site is organised into twelve named series — Entropy, The Present, First Impressions, Vanitas, Signature Series, Singularity, Alien Intelligence, Principia, CUBIQUE, Robert Mallary Portraits, Azar and 2009-2020 — each with its own statement and eight or more works. A Shows page lists nine exhibitions from 2023 to 2025, including a First Impressions solo show at Offline Gallery, New York. Since early 2024 he has run a daily practice, so the newest series grow continuously.
Reach for this when a brief calls for AI imagery that does not read as AI — the work is compositing-led, with AI supplying elements inside a hand-built collage, and the per-series statements tell you exactly which parts were generated. The Alien Intelligence and Vanitas pages are the strongest references for classical-painting-plus-3D treatments; the About page is the one to quote for the method. The site is Squarespace and renders text server-side, so pages fetch cleanly, but individual works have no captions or metadata — do not expect prompts.
Why it is here. It is a rare case of an AI-assisted practice with a real gallery record and written intent behind each series, which makes it usable as an argument for a direction rather than just a mood board.
