Font Awesome
2,883 free icons plus 609 brand marks; the full library is a paid subscription
Tier A · StrongIcon SetServicefontawesome.com

Font Awesome is the oldest widely-deployed icon toolkit, shipped as an icon font, plain SVGs and a JS/SVG renderer. The free package (@fortawesome/fontawesome-free 7.3.1) contains 2,883 icons: 2,001 Solid, 273 Regular and 609 Brands. Paid tiers unlock the rest of the ~16,000-icon library plus the Light, Thin, Duotone and Sharp families, hosted Kits, and icon subsetting. Free icons are CC BY 4.0, the fonts are OFL-1.1 and the code is MIT.
npm install @fortawesome/fontawesome-freeFor an agent
Only reach for Font Awesome when the codebase already uses it or the task specifically needs its 609 brand marks — for generic UI glyphs Lucide or Iconify give you more, newer icons under a friendlier licence and with no attribution clause. If you must confirm an icon exists in the free tier, read `metadata/icons.yml` or the `svgs/{solid,regular,brands}` directories from the npm package instead of the website, which is an empty JS shell to any non-browser fetch. Watch the licence split: CC BY 4.0 means the free icons need attribution somewhere in your product, and any class name you find in a tutorial may silently be a Pro-only style (fa-light, fa-thin, fa-duotone, fa-sharp) that renders as a blank box.
Why it is here. It is the icon set that taught the web to use icon fonts, and it still has the deepest brand-logo coverage of any general toolkit. But it is now the only major set in this category where the good half is behind a paywall.

- Free tier is CC BY 4.0 with attribution. Pro is a per-seat annual subscription (widely reported at ~$120/user/year, with a Pro+ tier around $150) — fontawesome.com/plans renders client-side and returned only its <title> to every fetch, so these figures come from secondary sources and are NOT verified on the vendor page.
