Before you ship
12- 01Show a link to delete account — visible in the profile or settings, and available in the support area; do not make this difficult
- 02Politely ask for feedback — helpful to know why somebody is leaving, but never pressured or forced
- 03Explain what it means to delete the account before confirming — be clear about what happens to the account and the information in it
- 04Confirm account has been deleted — acknowledge the completion comfortably rather than hiding it
- 05Re-authenticate before the destructive step — password or passkey, because deletion is exactly the class of action WCAG 3.3.4 Error Prevention (Legal, Financial, Data) exists for
- 06Offer a grace period with recovery — say how long it lasts and what happens at the end of it
- 07Offer an export before deletion, and make it complete enough to be worth having
- 08Say what happens to shared and team content — owned documents, comments, invitations and anything other people depend on
- 09Couple it to billing — cancel active subscriptions as part of the flow, or say plainly that they continue
- 10Confirm by email — deletion is the one action a user must be able to prove happened
- 11State the legal timeline where it applies — GDPR Article 17 requires erasure without undue delay, and Article 12(3) requires a response within one month, extendable by two for complex requests
- 12State what is retained and why — records kept for accounting, fraud or legal obligation, and for how long
