Extraset
Swiss foundry with 16 ES families priced flat in Swiss francs, under a EULA that refuses any organisation over 50 employees
Tier B · UsefulTypefaceStudioextraset.ch
Extraset is an independent Swiss type foundry, run as EXTRASET SÀRL from Carouge in the canton of Geneva. Every family carries the ES prefix. The catalogue holds 16: ES Allianz, ES Build, ES Dokument, ES Face, ES Klarheit Grotesk, ES Klarheit Grotesk Paneuro, ES Klarheit Grotesk Mono, ES Klarheit Kurrent, ES Klarheit Kurrent Mono, ES Klarheit Plakat, ES Nein, ES Park, ES Peak, ES Peak Rounded, ES Quarz, ES Rebond Grotesque, ES Replan Variform and ES Schwarzweiss. Pricing is flat and printed on the homepage, which almost no foundry does. A single style is CHF 70 for most families and CHF 50 for the single-style ES Nein. A complete family runs from CHF 210 for ES Klarheit Plakat to CHF 1,050 for the 60-style ES Dokument. ES Klarheit Grotesk Paneuro is the outlier at CHF 120 a style and CHF 800 a family. The site also counts stylistic sets per family, from 2 to 20, and publishes a guide to them. The EULA is the unusual part. It excludes organisations of any kind with more than 50 employees, and it also excludes political and religious organisations. A large company cannot buy under these terms and has to ask. Students get 50 per cent off by mailing a current student card. A half-price sale on the whole catalogue was running when this record was written. The foundry also sells T-shirts.
For an agent
Read the EULA before you recommend Extraset to anyone. It excludes every organisation with more than 50 employees, and also political and religious organisations. For a large client the answer is no, and the buyer must contact the foundry instead. That single clause disqualifies more briefs than any price does. Prices are safe to quote here, which is rare. Both the per-style and the per-family figure sit in the served HTML beside each family, in Swiss francs. State the currency: these are CHF, not euros or dollars. Reach for ES Klarheit Grotesk when a brief asks for a neutral Swiss grotesque, and read the stylistic sets guide first. The families carry 2 to 20 sets each, and much of the character sits in those alternates, not in the default glyphs.
Why it is here. Extraset publishes what most foundries hide: a flat price beside every family. It also writes a licence that draws a hard line at 50 employees, which turns a routine purchase into a real constraint and makes the terms worth reading before the specimen.
