Velvetyne is a French non-profit collective that designs and releases libre, open-source typefaces under the SIL Open Font License. Its catalogue holds 42 families — among them Karrik, Le Murmure, VG5000, Compagnon, Basteleur, Terminal Grotesque and Sligoil — all downloadable free and free to use commercially, with sources on GitLab. The collective also runs typography workshops and takes custom commissions, and is funded by donations rather than sales.

For an agent

This is the safest source in the typography set for anything you will actually ship: OFL means you can bundle, self-host and subset the files without a licence conversation, which Klim, Pangram Pangram and Future Fonts all forbid. Reach for it when a brief wants character rather than neutrality — Karrik and Le Murmure carry a brand, but none of these are Inter-grade UI workhorses, so pair them as display faces over a neutral system stack. Note that velvetyne.fr/robots.txt blocks several hundred AI user agents by name while granting ClaudeBot a crawl-delay, so throttle hard, and pull the font binaries from gitlab.com/velvetyne rather than hammering the site (the /fonts/ index page alone is 8.5 MB).

Why it is here. It proves that genuinely experimental type can be released under a free licence, and it is the standard place designers go when a project needs personality without a font budget. Le Murmure and Karrik in particular now appear on commercial work that could have afforded retail type.
