archives.design

A hand-built index of graphic design books, annuals and specimens that already sit on the Internet Archive, with the borrow status marked

Tier B · UsefulDirectoryReferenceGalleryarchives.design

archives.design does one useful thing: it finds graphic design material inside the Internet Archive and files it so a designer can actually find it again. Valery Marier compiles and curates it, and the site calls it a labour of love run in her free time. Ten categories cut the collection: Annuals, Books, Branding, Editorial, Education, Ephemera, Information, Interactive, Posters and Type Specimens. Each entry gives the year, the place, the creator and a written note. An entry for a 1965 R. Hunter Middleton essay explains it was published as a keepsake beside a talk he gave at UCLA. The 1990 AIGA graphic design annual is listed with what it covers. The detail that saves time is the availability tag. Every item is marked always_available, borrow_only or stream_only, so you know before you click whether you can read it now or must join a queue. Submissions go by email. The site publishes a robots.txt and a sitemap, but the sitemap holds one URL, because the whole archive is a single page.

For an agent

Read the availability tag before you follow a link. always_available means you can open it now, borrow_only means the Internet Archive lending queue, and stream_only means you cannot download it. That one field decides whether the item is usable in the next ten minutes. Use it as a finding aid, not as a source. Every item lives on archive.org, and this site is the index that makes the graphic design material findable inside a much larger collection. Fetch the whole page at once. The archive is one page with no pagination and a one-URL sitemap, so a single request returns the catalogue, and there is no per-item route to walk.

Why it is here. The Internet Archive holds a great deal of graphic design history and almost no way to find it by design category. One person built that index by hand, and marked what you can actually read today.

Provenance

Verified 2026-08-29. HTTP 200. https://archives.design/ 200, 58 KB server-rendered; the page reads "A digital archive of graphic design related items that are available on the Internet Archives" with the tags §always_available, §borrow_only and §stream_only, and states "This collection is compiled and curated by Valery Marier. It is a labour of love ran in her free time" and "Want to submit an item to the collection? Send it over to info@archives.design"; the menu lists Annuals, Editorial, Branding, Ephemera, Books, Education, Posters, Type Specimens, Interactive and Information; sample entries read "An essay on the forgotten art of the punchcutter — 1965 :: USA :: R. Hunter Middleton" with the note that it was "published as a keepsake alongside a talk given by R. Hunter Middleton to the School of Library Service of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)", and "1990 :: New York :: American Institute of Graphic Arts — The AIGA graphic design annual for 1990"; counted 54 item blocks and 15 distinct archive.org/details ids in the first load. https://archives.design/robots.txt 200 and /sitemap.xml 200 but with a single URL, so the archive is one page. https://archives.design/llms.txt 404.
