Letterform Archive is a San Francisco institution that holds original graphic design and lettering work, and its Online Archive puts more than 3,500 of those objects on the web at oa.letterformarchive.org. The photography is the reason to use it. Each object is imaged to keep the texture of paper and ink and the relief of letterpress or engraved printing, and the web images hold that detail under zoom. Almost nothing else online shows a printed piece as a physical thing rather than a flat scan. Filtering runs on country, designer, decade and format, and the visual search updates as you narrow it. Saved sets are called Tables, they can be shared, and they open in a full-screen slideshow, which the site suggests for teaching type history and for client mood boards. The named collections are the archive's spine: Arthur Baker, W. A. Dwiggins, Emigre, Ross F. George, Dennis Y. Why it is here. Every other archive here flattens a printed piece into a scan. This one photographs the object, so the paper, the ink and the press impression survive, which is the part a designer actually needs to judge historical work.
