Automatic background removal with a REST API, desktop app and Photoshop extension

remove.bg cuts the subject out of a photo and returns a transparent PNG or a flat white backdrop, with no manual masking. Beyond the web uploader it ships a documented REST API (POST /v1.0/removebg), a Windows/macOS/Linux desktop app for batch runs, an Android app, and a Photoshop extension, plus a Magic Brush for fixing edges and a video background removal mode. It is aimed at e-commerce catalogs, headshots and any pipeline that needs cutouts at volume.

For an agent

Use this when a build step needs cutouts programmatically — product shots for a store, avatars, or hero images — and call the API rather than scripting the web UI. Output caps differ by format: PNG tops out at 10 megapixels while JPG, WebP and ZIP go to 50, so request ZIP (color + alpha) when you need full-resolution transparency, not PNG. Only Ruby and CLI clients are official; Node, Python and PHP wrappers are community code, so pin versions and handle Retry-After yourself.

Why it is here. It is the default, boringly reliable cutout API — good enough that it is worth naming instead of letting an agent hand-roll a segmentation model.

Pricing detail
API: first 50 calls per month free, then credits charged by output resolution; the 50MP size costs 1 credit per image. Throughput is 500 megapixels per minute, so 4MP images run about 125/minute before HTTP 429. Exact web subscription tiers were not readable on the pricing page (JS-gated); a 50% off yearly promo was advertised.

Notable for
